What is the South Beach Diet?

Dr. Authur Agatston created the South Beach diet plan. Dr. Agatston developed this diet plan for overweight heart patients. These patients experienced great results and healthy weight loss. Since this time the South Beach diet has grown exponentially to include all people who want a healthier lifestyle and loose weight. It is now one of the most popular diet plans of all time.

How does this diet plan work?

The South Beach diet plan works by reducing your cravings for unhealthy foods and replacing these foods with good tasting healthy foods. You will learn what carbohydrates are good and which ones are bad. Although this may sound similar to other diet plans, the South Beach diet plan is based around the Glycemic Index, so you are working with your body. It is not a strictly low carb diet.

There are three phases to weight loss:

Phase 1 – The Strict Phase:
This phase of the diet plan lasts two weeks. You will eat normal sized portions of meat, fish, veggies, eggs, cheese, and nuts. It includes three meals a day plus some snacking. This period is intended to change your body chemistry, get rid of cravings, and start shedding the pounds.

Phase 2 – The Weight Loss Phase:
During the second phase of this diet plan you will reintroduce good carbohydrates, such as fruits and whole grains, back into your diet. You will also learn to avoid carbs that increase your blood sugar and make you gain weight by using the Glycemic Index as your guide. Phase two lasts until you reach your weight loss goal.

Phase 3 – The Maintenance Phase:
By the time you reach this phase you will have lost significant weight and created a healthy lifestyle. You will have improved your blood chemistry to provide you with long-term health benefits. By continuing to eat healthy wholesome foods you enjoy, you will maintain the health benefits you gained in phases one and two.
